Limitations

This section provides discusses the feature limitations of the Zoom Workplace VDI app.

VDI Feature Limitations

Some Zoom features are not available with the Zoom Workplace VDI app because of technical limitations related to the infrastructure and media offloading requirements. Key features with limited support or that are unsupported are detailed below.

Local Recording

Due to the lack of writing space on most thin clients and Zoom’s continuous writing process for local recordings, shared or synchronizing resources—such as a VDI server—the VDI app only supports cloud recording.

Virtual Background

Standard thin clients may not meet system requirements to use virtual backgrounds within meetings. Optimized thin clients with sufficient processing power are supported. Refer to our virtual background system requirements for more information.

Dual Monitor Mode

Due to the limited processing capabilities of most VDI hardware and the high demands of dual monitor mode, this feature is generally unsupported for the majority of VDI users. However, users with sufficient hardware may still be able to utilize it.

Group HD

Most remote clients are not able to utilize Group HD at 720p or 1080p resolution because of hardware processing limitations; however, Group HD is available if users are optimized and their local machine meets minimum requirements.

Optimize Video for Screen Sharing

The Zoom Workplace VDI app is optimized for screen sharing at a low frame rate to maintain server performance, which can produce choppy animated content when sharing from a virtual desktop. Users can share up to 30 frames per second with the “Optimize Video” option, if the EnableOptimizeForVideo registry key is enabled for the Zoom Workplace VDI app. Visit our VDI app registry settings article for more information.

Peer-to-Peer Connections

Because of the intended, optimized connection for the Zoom Workplace VDI app with the Plug-In, the VDI app will never establish a P2P connection and will always connect to the cloud.

Video Messaging

Video messaging requires downloading video files to the virtual desktop, which currently cannot be offloaded to the VDI Plug-In. Consequently, video messaging is unsupported with the Zoom Workplace VDI app.

Powerpoint as a Background for Share

Sharing a Powerpoint as a virtual background through the Share functionality is not currently supported due to technical limitations between the virtual desktop and VDI Plug-In.

Feature Parity

Due to the nature of the VDI platform and supporting various operating systems, some new features are not immediately available for the Zoom Workplace VDI app upon release. Readers are encouraged to monitor the Release Notes for VDI page to monitor when features are made available.
